Recovery takes more than a discharge summary. For patients without stable housing, leaving the hospital often means returning to a shelter or the street, where wounds do not heal and medications get lost. Recuperative care, also called medical respite, gives people a safe, supportive place to rest, follow their care plan, and get back on their feet.

Recuperative care is a covered benefit under Minnesota Health Care Programs. A patient qualifies when they meet all of the following:
A physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant issues discharge instructions and sends the referral to our team by phone or email.
We verify eligibility and bed availability, coordinate transportation details with the discharging team, and welcome the patient to our Richfield facility.
Over a stay of 21 to 60 days, the patient rests, heals, and works with our team on follow-up care and a plan for stable housing.
